Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond

With Fall 2017 season coming to an end, a lot of great anime series gave us the time of our lives. We saw new seasons of favorite anime classics and even new amazing ones that surprised all the fans. But for now, we’re going to look at one of the overlooked series of the anime world, Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond, or also known as Kekkai Sensen & Beyond.

Kekkai Sensen & Beyond is the second season of the series, focusing on the daily life of Leonardo Watch and his adventures with the secret heroes of the city of Hellsalom’s Lot, “Libra”.

1. A Mixture of Everything

One thing I really liked about the second season of Kekkai Sensen is that they managed to fit every common genre together throughout the series. Every episode somewhat contained every element that you want to see in an anime. There’s action, comedy, tear-jerkers, and even an adorable waifu! (Chain-san!)

What you’ll usually be seeing are the frequent but amazing fight scenes, which are always accompanied by name of the character’s combat style dramatically typed out in kanji. The cool part here, though, is how the series tried to express a “slice of life” feel even in the midst of a supernatural and chaotic setting. As I watched further, I began to understand that all the chaos is just the everyday norm for the characters. The mixture of this action and the “slice of life” vibe made the series more interesting.

2. OVA Overload

Unlike the first season, Kekkai Sensen & Beyond decided to focus on the daily lives of the characters instead of plot. Of course, the story still revolves around the main character, Leonardo Watch, but we see from his perspective the life and journey of a different character in each episode. As a result, the series feels like a compilation of OVAs, except for the last few episodes, where most of the plot was crammed into. It goes without saying that you should watch the first season first in order to fully appreciate Kekkai Sensen & Beyond.

Kekkai Sensen & Beyond taught me the value of being steadfast. Hellsalom’s Lot is a setting of trouble and distortion, yet I could see how the characters coped and how they just went along with everything. Even Leonardo, a particularly normal kid, stayed strong and tried find happiness amidst the chaos of the city.

Even with the lack of solid story, Kekkai Sensen & Beyond gave us one of the most awesome anime of Fall 2017. With the cool characters, amazing little stories, and the awesome music by “Unison Square Garden” and “DAOKO”, this series is a must-see! These reasons are why this series continues to hold a special place in my heart. Rate: 8/10.
