Gacha Spotlight: Arknights

Remember the time when the game Plants VS Zombies was a thing, where we frantically set up varieties of flowers and nuts and plants trying to keep zombies away from our lawn? Remember their super catchy theme song? Or maybe you remember the infamous flash game, Bloons Tower Defense? Those were good times… But apparently, a Chinese developer Hypergryph and publisher YoStar took out that nostalgia, added a cool anime feel, and viola, Arknights was born!

Tower Defense: Anime Edition

So what’s so good about Arknights? Well, just by looking all the cute and cool characters with unique traits, we have all we need to get ourselves hooked! Yes, the tower defense concept is still there, but having a huge variety of characters to choose from is really fun to mix and match while making a cool team to kill off those baddies. Speaking of, the story also is interesting, for it revolves around a post-apocalyptic feel—with a twist similar to the famous plot we all are familiar of… X-Men.

Game of Status

Arknights is a gacha game—drawing characters, from rare to super rare, for bragging rights, and experiencing the pure joy or sadness of getting or not getting the character we wanted. Gameplay is quite easy, but with a really steep difficulty progression, which might make you grind a lot just to level up your characters enough to progress.. But that’s basically the essence of every gacha game: pull characters, grind to make them powerful, reach the hardest levels, show to your friends, and repeat. And that probably makes everything worth it.

To be honest, I have played a LOT of gacha games lately: Fate: Grand Order, Granblue Fantasy, Dragalia Lost, even this game’s sibling gacha, Azur Lane. But it’s funny that even though I already have a ton of games to keep me busy, I grew to like Arknights. Rate: 8/10
